Adjusting your Coffee Bean Grinder

The bean grinder determines so much in the process of making the perfect espresso based drink.  The courseness of the grind will dictate the bitterness of the final drink, whether that's a pure espresso, or a cappuccino or something more "exotic".

It is possible to adjust the grinder yourself, but be advised, get it wrong, and you will ruin you're whole coffee menu.   If you do experiment with your grinder, please do tell us when you call to report that the coffee doesn't taste right. It will be your grinder settings !

  • Put the beans into the hopper, grind the coffee for about 10 seconds and discard this ground coffee completely.
  • Grind the coffee again for about 15 seconds or enough for 2 shots.  Dispense the ground coffee into a double handle so that it is about three quarters full and tamp down.  If your grinder comes with a dosing lever, pull that twice to get the correct amount. If you have scales, now is a good time to measure the amount of coffee to achieve the correct amount (14oz for a double shot).
  • Put the handle onto the group and put measuring shot glasses under the spouts and press the coffee button on the machine.
  • Time the infusion, from the time you push the button, to the time the coffee reaches the line on the shot glass.  If it is between 20 to 30 seconds it is normally about right.  Check that the crema is thick and tan colour.
  • If the infusion time is too slow, switch off the power to the grinder, move the grind ring two clicks towards Grosso or G (clockwise) to make the setting courser.

    OR

If the infusion time is too fast, switch off the power to the grinder, move the grind ring two teeth towards Fine or F (anti clockwise) to make the setting finer.
  • Now repeat the steps above until you are happy with the infusion time and the quality of the crema.  Also see our Troubleshooting your Coffee Bean Grinder web page.
  • Be sure the grind lock is properly engaged when you have finished.  We recommend that you mark the final position of the grind ring with a pencil or Tip-Ex.  This will enable you to reset it if it is accidentally moved in the future.
